What is Mob Mentality?
Herd mentality, mob mentality and pack mentality, also lesser known as gang mentality, describes how people can be influenced by their peers to adopt certain behaviors on a largely emotional, rather than rational, basis.
When individuals are affected by mob mentality, they may make different decisions than they would have individually. What driving force could be so powerful that it could transform a serene group of individuals into a personality violent mob?
Psychology behind Mob-Mentality –
Some aspects of social psychology explain relevant things related to Mob mentality or group violence.
- When people are part of a group, they often experience deindividuation or a loss of self-awareness.
- When people deindividuate, they are less likely to follow normal restraints and inhibitions and more likely to lose their sense of individual identity.
- Groups can generate a sense of emotional excitement, which can lead to the provocation of behaviors that a person would not typically engage in if alone.
- The group seems to make some behaviors acceptable that would not be acceptable otherwise.
DE-INDIVIDUATION
- Deindividuation obviously does not occur every time people get together in a group.
- There are some group characteristics that increase the likelihood of violence, such as group size and physical anonymity.
- People believe they cannot be held responsible for violent behavior is a part of a mob because they perceive the violent action as the group and not their own behavior.
- When in a large group, people tend to experience a diffusion of responsibility.
- The bigger a mob, the more its members lose self-awareness and become willing to engage in dangerous behavior.
- Physical anonymity also leads to a person experiencing fewer social inhibitions.
- When people feel that their behavior cannot be traced back to them, they are more likely to break social norms and engage in violence.
What factors lead to such behaviors?
- Generally, all of us are susceptible to participate in group behaviors but there are certain characteristics and situations that play a role.
- Adolescents who share antisocial tendencies and lack of close family bonds are more likely to search for social identity in gangs.
- The greater individuals feel like they identify with a group, the greater the pressures for them to conform and deindividuate it becomes.
What reasons lead people to MOB?
- Group violence is most likely to occur when the group is large, people are able to remain anonymous, and people experience a diffusion of responsibility.
- Certain situations also play a role, such as when resources are scarce, we are surrounded by like-minded people, and/or when emotions are aroused.
Group Polarization-
- This means that like-minded people reinforce one another’s viewpoints. Group polarization strengthens of the opinions of each person in the group.
- Some examples of these include discussions and decisions made about public policy, terrorism, college life, and all types of violence.
- Another example of informational influence within group polarization is jury verdicts.
Why other’s opinion influence us?
- We live in a complex world. Use the decisions of others as a heuristic, or mental shortcut, to navigate our lives.
- We rely on signals like Popularity. If everyone else is buying something, the reasoning goes, there is a good chance the item is worth our attention.
- Another reason that influences us is that humans are social. We have survived because of our ability to band together.
- The challenge is in evaluating personal beliefs when they contradict what others are doing.
- We showed that evolution will lead individuals to overuse social information, and copy others too much than they should.
- The result is that groups evolve to be unresponsive to changes in their environment and spend too much time copying one another, and not making their own decisions.
What changes can we bring?
In order for anything to improve, we will need to take action on an individual level. We can’t force anyone to change, but we can change ourselves.
- Take your time and think through your responses before commenting, tweeting or texting. Don’t reply if you’re feeling pressured, stressed or disconnected.
- Do your research before forming an opinion and be open to additional information that comes your way.
- Get comfortable with standing out, even if that means standing alone.
- Stop ignoring bullies. Our enemies want us “to feel cut off from everyone else, because if it’s just you alone, you’re not much of a threat.”
One can overcome the tyranny of the herd mentality by adopting the following traits and improving them by practicing them on a regular basis:
Courage:
It is very difficult to upset or to disappoint your fellow companions in the journey of life.It is hard to see them suffer or even insult you just because you decided to do something that contradicts their expectations from you. However, courage is a necessity to overcome offenses from other people and to admit and to live with the fact that sometimes you have your own thoughts, feelings, and motives that don’t have, all the time, to correlate with those of others.
Logic:
The thing which usually convinces people to put their beliefs into something and to certain deeds is logic.
The more logically correct and believable a belief is, the more convince-able it would become to other people who are exposed to this logical structure. People are convinced by logic, social structures and ceremonies are built.
If one to overcome the herd mentality, one should enforce his non-conformity with a proper logical structure to support his abstaining-from-the-herd mentality.
Responsibility
Standing all by yourself against the masses and their beliefs is not an easy thing. Regardless of the reason that made you wish to overcome their mentality, it is all your “fault” for being against popular beliefs and practices.
Awakened by a certain call, is a sign of pure individualism, and thus a very vital call not only for you but for others to follow your path even long after your death.
Skepticism:
This is the most fundamental aspect of being a black sheep: the fact that one is in disagreement with a certain or a set of subjects and the execution of issues.
After being skeptic about a certain subject, one needs to rest and find other occupations, so he will be recharged and, on the side, become stronger on the intellectual level.
